Experimenting with Ilford XP2 Super 400 35mm Film
I love black and white film. But this one? Ilford’s XP2 Super 400 35mm Film. It’s not exactly one of my favorites. Why? It’s a little pink. But I probably would shoot with it again in a different season, hello summer and lots of sunshine. Because its film, its still pretty rad.
One thing I noticed looking down at my subject, Kai below, with that harsh highlight in the background reflecting off the deck - it has this nice balancing contrast between her and that. It looks great with high contrast!
On the photo below, I probably should have exposed this one more stop to get a little bit more details out of those shadows.
This is similar to the deck photo, lots of contrasting light make this photo stand out more. She’s patiently waiting for her frisbee to be thrown here. Such a little stalker dog.
I love the seperation in aperture between the two photos below captured in the same location. I took these recently after getting a new 50mm lens for my Nikon 10 and I was really just testing it out. There is nothing like the sharpness of having a fixed lens like that, and it really does look beautiful on 35mm film.
Here’s a few more testing out a lower aperture with the 50mm lens. If I am anywhere in that f/1.8 - f/4 it really is my happy place when photographing closeups in nature. There’s a few examples of that below.
The last shot. I litterally brace myself for the first and last shots of the roll. Because I never know what that shot is going to look like. And this turned out great, I love the unknown so much. The two tones here with the little tear at the end. There is nothing else like it.
