HARMAN PHOENIX 200 COLOR FILM | 35MM FILM REVIEW
HARMAN Phoenix 200 is the first-ever color film from the Harman Factory in the United Kingdom. It’s original release date was December 1, 2023. This is an experimental C41 color film (for non-film people, the “200” refers to its ISO).
This was my first time shooting this film stock! What I noticed was that it really leans towards the warm side, especially with the reds. Coming from someone that loves to shoot directly towards the sun, a lot, this film is perfect for that backlit glowing light.
The shots from the dimly-lit forest show you just how warm this film can get in a “cooler” (dimmer) light. Even the greens and blues (or cool colors) feel warm. This is the full-roll here, totally unedited — so you can see what I see!
Thank you to NICE Film Club for the developing and scans! They really did a great job with these, and their turnaround-time far exceeded anything I expected (which was just a few days).
Field Notes: I did over expose these at least one stop, if not two. Then I had NICE Film Club push it a stop when developing these. While I have had plenty of practice shooting film, I have not perfected it. The main thing I do when shooting film is over-expose it! Digital is the complete oppostie (you want to underexpose). But with film, you want to burn that negative with at least an extra stop or two to get a nice exposure.
For me, this photo below is complete perfection. I did not know how this would turn out, and to be honest I thought it was a little to bright. I tried to balance the contrast between light and dark with the tree in the background and it worked out perfectly.
With silhouettes and sunshine this HARMAN Phoenix 200 film really has a nice color case, it really feels like the aura is purple here - with a pink gradiant rainbow.
The light is really very beautiful here.
Wow, these greens are warm. I took two vertical shots of the pond. In the first frame I thought it might be a little too dark, and it is. So I shot a second one here, its really about the curve of the algee and that bright yellow tree here — and I included the sky because I thought that might brighten up the frame a bit, and it did.
Kai is shy with photos. I love her. Sometimes its tough to get one of her looking directly into the lens, and get it in focus at the same time! Everything is manual here.
I thought this shot below might be a mess. With no contrast — and no closeup with more a seperation that could have been made with the aperture, it is in deed a mess. But I shot it anyways to see how it colors seperate — and its a blended mess.
This is a little snake. He liked hanging out on the trail, its nice and warm there. Cattle Dog feet for size. Cute!
This is not as much of a mess as the last mess, but still a mess. The sun came through the shadowy forest and I used a smaller aperture for separation.
I think this is really a sweet spot for this film. It really loves bright light. It’s a style thing. The warm tones really are more muted when the backlight is extra bright.
This one below is just bizarre to me. I think I highly over exposed it. It’s so muted.
